Vet School FAQ

When did I start my application?

I began my application as soon as VMCAS opened. Most applications go through VMCAS, which opens in January. Schools are added to VMCAS in May for you to start working on adding prerequisites and their specific essays. Texas schools, however use TMDSAS, so make sure to look there for Texas A&M and Texas Tech if you are interested in applying to either of those schools.

Is research experience required?

Research experience is not required, but looks great on your application. I worked in an organic chemistry lab for a year during my undergraduate education, and my time there helped me realize that veterinary medicine was for me.

How many hours of experience do I need?

I personally had about 800 hours of experience in small animal clinics before submitting my application. I worked at a small animal clinic during my junior year for about 20 hours a week, and I worked at two different clinics over the summer before submitting my application for a total of about 40 hours every week.

What about the GRE requirements?

I did not take the GRE because the schools I applied to did not require it. And, I must say, I was very happy I did not have to. I am not a fan of standardized tests, and I imagine most of you are the same way. Most veterinary schools do not require it anymore, but make sure to check your specific schools prerequisite page.
